"If it's a symbol, to hell with it!"
The graphic on the front of this t-shirt describes a famous encounter Flannery O'Connor had as a young woman. While at a dinner party where the host stated that she thought of the Eucharist as a powerful symbol, O'Connor boldly responded in a shaky voice, "if it's a symbol, to hell with it!"
O'Connor herself was one of the symbolic masters of the twentieth century and an artist of the highest level. And yet she knew that what's at stake in the Eucharist is not merely symbolism, but Christ himself.
From Flannery O'Connor's time to our time, there has been a dramatic decline in Catholics' participation in the Mass and belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
This little conversation between the young O'Connor and her more prominent counterpart remains a prophetic utterance about the truth of the Real Presence for our time.
This soft and comfy t-shirt is pre-shrunken and light yet durable.
The back of the tee is blank and the sleeve features a small Word on Fire logo graphic.
