Francis L. Filas, S.J.'s book JOSEPH: THE MAN CLOSEST TO JESUS. This plethora of very interesting and little-known information about St. Joseph has never previously been gathered into a single book. This is essentially a "little Summa" of St. Joseph, as it is the unique source in any language of the entire life, theology, and devotional history of St. Joseph. The present edition of Joseph: The Man Closest to Jesus is based on Father Filas' four prior publications. Complete revision, enlargement of all information that needed updating, and re-issuance of older sections of lasting worth allow us to give this complete thesaurus of facts about St. Joseph (sometimes published here for the first time in English).
The current book, a reproduction of the 1962 edition, is divided into six units. The first examines the sources for our understanding of St. Joseph; the second expands on what we know about St. Joseph's ancestry, links to other biblical figures, trade, and age when he married Our Lady. The third element is entirely devoted to questions about his marriage, such as its genuinity and St. Joseph's doubts about Mary. Father Filas' complete assessment of Joseph's fatherly relationship to Jesus is offered in the fourth unit. The fifth portion discusses Joseph's dignity, sanctity, supernatural blessings, patronage, and potential advancement in the liturgy. The final section reviews the entire history of St. Joseph devotion, from the beginnings of the Church to 1962, and quotes (with analysis) all current papal statements on St. Joseph.
