Born in Poland in 1894, Maximilian loved the Blessed Virgin Mary with all his heart and prayed the rosary every day. One day Mary appeared to him and offered two crowns—one to serve God and one to become a martyr. He chose both. Maximilian grew up and became a Franciscan priest who served God by comforting those who were suffering. He brought them the anointing of the sick, the sacrament of healing. During World War II he was arrested and put into a prison camp. It was there that he volunteered to take the place of another prisoner, dying in his place and becoming a martyr.
