A. J. Cronin (1896–1981) was a Scottish doctor and novelist. Achieving wide popularity with his socially-conscience stories, most of them medical in subject or religious in theme, Cronin routinely made the bestseller lists over the course of his almost-fifty-year literary career. He is best-known for his National Book Award-winning novel The Citadel (1937) and The Keys of the Kingdom (1941).
