The Book of Miracles of Saint Louis, Bishop of Toulouse, offers a fascinating glimpse into the intersection of medieval faith, medicine, and everyday life. Prince Louis of Anjou died at twenty-three after becoming a Franciscan friar and bishop of Toulouse. Following his death, reports of miraculous healings spread quickly, eventually contributing to his canonization in 1317.
This remarkable collection preserves 211 accounts of miracles attributed to Saint Louis, many involving illness, injury, disability, and the healing of both people and animals. The stories reveal how medieval communities understood sickness and healing and highlight the important roles of faith, physicians, pilgrimage, and saints in medieval life.
Originally written in Provençal and later translated into Latin, this edition presents the first English translation of the early fourteenth-century Latin manuscript. Rich in historical detail, it offers a vivid window into medieval medicine, religious belief, and the process of saint-making.
