In A Purposeful Path, Beaumier, director of the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies at Boston College, explores the Jesuit tradition of the pilgrimage experiment, recounting his own month-long journey as a Jesuit novice from the time he left his novitiate with $30 in his pocket.

Spinale, a Jesuit scholastic and moderator of America magazine's Catholic Book Club, provides a brief synopsis of the book in this guide, considers the notion of pilgrimage (both in the Christian tradition and Beaumier's experience), and offers a variety of resources and questions to prompt and complement classroom discussion.
