Cándido de Dalmases writes that Francis Borgia, the third superior general of the Society of Jesus, "is a little–known and poorly appreciated saint" (who previously wrote a biography of St. Ignatius of Loyola). Borgia was born into Spanish monarchy and served as a crucial counsellor to Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. (and king of Spain). Following the death of his wife in 1546, Borgia finished the Spiritual Exercises and applied to join the Society of Jesus, which was then relatively unknown. De Dalmases traces Borgia's elevation to the rank of superior general and evaluates the claim that, because of his upbringing in such a privileged environment, he was unable to assimilate into the Society's ethos. This volume also covers Borgia's far–reaching administrative decisions as superior general, as well as the Society's development into Asia and the Americas when he was in charge.
