An all-star cast of Burt Lancaster, Olivia Hussey, and Ben Cross shine in this film based on the book by Pope John Paul II (Which he called "the best possible film based on my play"). In Cracow, Poland, 1939, on the eve of World War II, two couples decide to get married. One couple, Andrej and Teresa, buy their wedding rings from a mysterious jeweller, played brilliantly by Lancaster. The old jeweller tells them about the true significance of the rings as symbols of love and everlasting unity. He knows that one day his path will cross theirs again.

And so this remarkable story about the deeper meaning of love unfolds. Spanning two generations and two continents, it follows both couples years later; parted by war and tragedy, but together by circumstance with families of their won. Teresa (Hussey) has a son who falls in love with the daughter of the second couple, Anna and Stefan (Cross). Their children's love serves to test the meaning of Anna and Stefan's own troubled marriage and the depth of their relationship. Driven by the uncertainty of her future with Stefan, Anna finds herself back in Poland, confronted again by the mysterious jeweller from years before, who challenges her to not run from her marriage troubles. There she learns the answer and finds the hope that all of us seek.

Running time 95 minutes.
