Frederick Wilhelmsen's Man's Knowledge of Reality, first published in 1956, is considered a classic work in Thomistic epistemology. Wilhelmsen begins by examining what he considers Descartes' "central difficulty," namely, philosophy's alleged incapacity to obtain what Descartes refers to as "certain knowledge." He then dives into a full investigation of Thomistic Metaphysical Realism, concentrating on our primal experience of being as the self-evident truth upon which we might organize our experience of reality, utilizing Descartes' argument as a starting point. Wilhelmsen then examines the natures of existence, knowledge, and judgement, and how they affect our experience of reality, building on this fundamental premise of being. Despite the intellectual rigour inherent in such a work, Wilhelmsen demonstrates his worth as both a philosopher and a teacher by never straying too far from the practical implications of such ideas, incisively demonstrating how Descartes' and others' theories have resulted in a loss of the unity and integrity of being, leading to the many false dualisms of the modern world.
