Together as a Companionship: A History of the Thirty–First, Thirty–Second, and Thirty–Third General Congregations of the Society of Jesus

Historian John W. Padberg, S.J., provides detailed accounts of the preparations and the actions taken at three recent General Congregations—the highest legislative gatherings within the Society of Jesus, convened “for matters of greater moment,” according to the Constitutions.

The 31st Congregation, which met in 1965 while the Second Vatican Council was still in session, resolved to adapt “to the exigencies of the Church and the needs of contemporary humankind.”

The 32nd Congregation met in 1974 and pledged the Society to the “service of faith and the promotion of justice.”

In 1983, the 33rd Congregation met to elect a new superior general, Peter–Hans Kolvenbach, and to renew the task of “announcing the Gospel.”

Fr. Padberg covers not only the serious moments in these gatherings but also the personal interactions and humorous encounters among a group of men from all over the world, joined in companionship. A lists of the participants at each of the three General Congregations is included.
