Illuminate your understanding of the Old Testament with introductions and context for each of its 46 books.

The Old Testament comprises more than half of the Bible and the vast bulk of Scripture's historical timeline; nonetheless, the ancient culture in which it was written and the unspoken context of its books make it difficult for readers to comprehend much of its wisdom.

With A Catholic Guide to the Old Testament, Catholics can now be rejuvenated in their study of Scripture, connect with the story of God's Chosen People, and discover new significance in the Old Testament's narrative.

This thorough yet approachable introduction to the Old Testament strives to reveal the divine revelation found in the Old Testament and to reveal the hidden intricacies of this divinely inspired text. It assists Catholics in becoming more familiar with each book's human author, important characters, and key topics in order to transform their view of the "big picture" of Scripture and its significance in their lives.

This guide to the Old Testament, written by four highly recognized biblical academics, includes the following:

  • 46 introductions to each of the Old Testament’s books, including:
  • the book’s relationship to the New Testament and Catholic Tradition,
  • its significance to the greater story of salvation
  • who wrote it and when
  • major characters, key events, and themes,
  • and more!
  • Plus, over a dozen full-color charts outlining major feasts, kings and prophets, covenants, genealogies, and more.
  • 15 full-color maps depicting the journeys of Abraham, desert wanderings of the Israelites, major kingdoms and empires, and more.
  • Over 20 articles on the topics of geography, laws, sacrifice, literature, the canon of Scripture, archaeology and the accuracy of the biblical narrative, and more.
  • The Bible Timeline® color coding—the same system used in the chart-topping podcast The Bible in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)™ featuring Jeff Cavins.

With this Catholic guide, readers will no longer question how each Old Testament book relates to the narrative of Scripture, nor will they struggle to comprehend its primary characters, historical background, or literary genres.

A Catholic Guide to the Old Testament, the only introduction to the Old Testament based on The Bible Timeline Learning System, is the ideal companion to The Great Adventure Catholic Bible and the many courses of The Great Adventure® Bible Study curriculum.

Beautiful book
| June 15th, 2023
The quality is here, as usual for Ascension Press books from my experience. The only thing that is confusing is that the tabs are all the same colour and not distributed well. I’m hoping they will issue a tab set for this book, because it makes these types of books so readable and easily referenced. I haven’t gone through the whole book yet, but as someone new to Bible studies I really appreciate the extra Catholic content by Ascension Press. I also recommend this book store. I have been ordering for a while and packaging is excellent for everything from books to rosaries. Fast shipping.
