A Picturesque Tale of Progress was written by Miller with the assistance of Harry Neal Baum, former professor of history at the University of Wisconsin. It consists of nine volumes (including a separate index) divided into four themes—Beginnings, Conquests, New Nations, Explorations—with two volumes devoted to each theme. The “Picturesque” in the title refers, not to quaintness, but to the three hundred or more carefully chosen illustrations and maps gracing each volume. In a world where the level and quality of education has so grievously deteriorated, may this Angelico Press reprint edition shine as a beacon to a new generation of young (and not-so-young) scholars.
—Beginnings I sets out from the earliest traces of human culture, followed by the rise and fall of Ancient Egypt.
