In Salvation Is from the Catholic Church, apologist Trent Horn (Why We’re Catholic) offers a compelling Catholic answer: it is indeed Jesus who saves us, and he does so through the instrument of the Church that he founded and ordained for that very purpose.
As Trent shows, Jesus did not leave his followers to rely on a vague hope of salvation through some one-time personal confession of faith. (Did I do it right? Did I really mean it? How do I know it will last? What if I sin later?) No, he provided universal and tangible ways for all believers, throughout all time, to stay close to him and his saving grace.
The Catholic Church is the ordinary minister of those ways, extending to us everything that God has taught and provided for our salvation: true doctrine and morals, authentic spiritual leadership and worship, and the visible signs by which the power of Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice is made effective in our souls.
