St. Clare, who was born in 1194 to a rich Italian family, was one of the earliest disciples of St. Francis of Assisi. She formed a following known as the "Poor Clares" after deciding she wanted a life of poverty, and refusing to marry anyone but Jesus Christ. During the Crusades in 1241, soldiers arrived to assault the order. Clare rose to meet the troops with the Blessed Sacrament, despite her frailty and age, and begged God to protect her sisters. The army fled and fell back, as though dazed by the holy sight. Clare became too unwell to attend Mass at the end of her life, but a vision of the Mass appeared on her wall and, although being many miles away, she was able to hear it as though she were there in person. Because of this vision, she is the patron saint of television and eye ailments.
