St. John the Baptist, Jesus' cousin, was miraculously born to his elderly parents Zechariah and Elizabeth. In the desert, John started his career by preaching repentance and baptising individuals in the Jordan River. The Jordan was where John baptised Jesus. This is the event shown on our sock design: John pours water over Jesus as he wades in the Jordan and is showered in heavenly light at sunset.
John was famed for his austere ascetic lifestyle, which included donning camel's hair garments and subsisting on locusts and wild honey. John's contrite example has inspired generations of Christians, and the Rite of Baptism has evolved into a fundamental sacrament in the Church.
