St. Lucy was a young Christian martyr who lived in the third century in Syracuse, Sicily. Lucy, according to legend, pledged to stay chaste and devote her life to God. She turned down marriage offers and gave her fortune to the needy, which enraged a suitor, who reported her to the police as a Christian. Lucy was persecuted for her religion and subjected to a variety of tortures, including having her eyes gouged out. As a result, Lucy is known as the patron saint of the blind and visually challenged.
