The Pope: Considered in His Relations With the Church (Hardcover)

The Pope is Joseph de Maistre’s most systematic and ambitious work of ecclesiology and political philosophy. Written in the aftermath of the French Revolution and Napoleon’s humiliation of Pope Pius VII, it is a passionate, ultramontane defense of the absolute spiritual and temporal supremacy of the Roman Pontiff.

Maistre argues that the Pope is not only the infallible head of the Church but the  indispensable keystone of European civilization itself.
