The Life of Saint Peter of Atroa offers a new Greek edition and the first English translation of the life of one of Byzantium’s notable monastic leaders.
Saint Peter of Atroa (773–837 CE) was a monk, abbot, and cofounder of the influential monastery of Saint Zachariah in Bithynia. Known for his devotion to solitude and monastic life, Peter established several communities and became involved in the religious conflicts surrounding Byzantine Iconoclasm. His resistance to imperial policies led to persecution, but after his death he was remembered as a miracle worker, and his tomb became a place of healing.
Written by his disciple Sabas, the Life offers a compelling look at Byzantine monasticism, religious conflict, and the life of a medieval saint. This edition presents a newly established Greek text alongside an English translation, making this important work accessible to modern readers for the first time.
