Bernhard Martin (1900-1985) grew up in Germany during the "ungodly" era of World War I and the postwar crises. Raised as a lukewarm Protestant, he became disillusioned with spiritual life in high school. He dabbled with academia, but in the end saw himself as a "poor fool" with no idea what to do with his life. This catastrophe resulted in many years spent in a sanitarium. After returning to university, a friend introduced him to Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy and the "Christian Community," a religious reform movement created under Steiner's encouragement. These viewpoints freed him from his crisis and led to a profound spiritual and emotional recovery. Between 1942 and 1944, Martin came into contact with the works, and subsequently the person, of Christian esotericist Valentin Tomberg (1900-1973), which led to an enduring connection in which Tomberg exposed him to Catholic Church spirituality. Martin converted to Catholicism in 1946, but, unlike Tomberg, chose to continue involved with the Anthroposophical Movement until the end of his life. The fascinating story of that voyage is told in this book.
