They are most known as St. Thérèse of Lisieux's parents, although she describes them as "more deserving of heaven than of earth." Both Louis and Zélie had planned to pursue monastic life in their early adulthood but discovered their vocation elsewhere; Louis was educated as a watchmaker, while Zélie was a brilliant lace maker. The jobs of the pair inspired the design of this sock. While the top of the sock depicts watch gears, the foot has one of Zélie's own lace designs. As in marriage, the patterning on the sock gradually morphs and joins. The couple had nine children, five of whom survived childhood and all of whom joined monastic life. They are the first married couple to have their names sanctified jointly.
