The Easter Vigil, one of the grandest liturgies in the Catholic Church, is celebrated in the dead of night. When the first match is struck, it symbolises Christ emerging from the grave and lighting the Easter Fire. The Easter Fire is ignited on the toe of our sock, and the darkness gently dispels upwards. The light then reaches the Paschal Candle, which has an Alpha and Omega emblem on it. It also features gold pins placed into the cross to depict Christ's wounds. Individual candles are then lighted from the Paschal Candle, reminding the congregation of their baptism. This is also the moment when Catechumens are baptised, and their candles are lighted to symbolise the coming of Christ's light into their life.
