Where We Got the Bible: Our Debt to the Catholic Church: The Bible didn't fall out of the sky and hit St. Jerome on the head. However, St. Jerome was a vessel that God used to create the original Canon of the Bible that we know and use today, over 1600 years after his work.
St. Jerome (/dʒəˈroʊm/; Latin: Eusebius Sophronius
Hieronymus; Greek: Εὐσέβιος Σωφρόνιος Ἱερώνυμος; c. 27 March 347 – 30 September
420) was a priest, confessor, theologian, and historian. He was born at
Stridon, a village near Emona on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia. He is best known for his translation of most of the Bible into Latin (the
translation that became known as the
Vulgate), and his commentaries on the
Gospels. His list of writings is extensive.
